Judging a shampoo's harshness or mildness because of its pH is a
modern misconception, yet many people consider choosing a shampoo
for its low pH factor, rather than considering its main performance
benefits.
"pH" is an abbreviation for the "potential hydrogen" of a
liquid. It's the degree of acidity or alkalinity in a substance and
is measured on a scale from 0, which is strongly acidic, to 14,
which is very alkaline.
Most shampoos fall in the normal pH range of 4-9, close to the
pH of natural substances like water, which is 7, and skin, which is
5-6.5. As long as a product's pH is similar to your hair's pH,
there is little effect. Most hair has a pH of 4.5-5.5 (slightly
acidic). Mild shampoos are typically those with a pH between 4.5
and 7 (neutral).
